“I don’t understand, Caitlyn.” Alice was sitting on the pool lounger staring at her. This time Caitlyn was the one who’d drunk most of the chardonnay that sat between them. It had been two days since she’d seen Dev. After she’d refused to talk anymore, he had dropped her at her house and left. Since then, he hadn’t texted or called. He hadn’t responded to the text she’d sent that night saying she was sorry.

Alice had come over unannounced when she’d heard the story from Russ. “You know he’s planning to leave tomorrow.”

Her heart lurched. The last couple of days had been a jumble of emotions for her. The conversations with Alexa and Alice, with Jax, and then with Dev had all crashed into one tightly knotted tangle that she couldn’t separate no matter how hard she tried.

“Look, I know I was against you and Dev getting together, but I can’t see you like this. Russ says Dev is a mess. He’s never seen the poor guy like that.” She moved from her pool lounger to Caitlyn’s. It was a rare cloudy and cool day so they were both in their sundresses enjoying the weather. Alice waited patiently. Caitlyn’s throat was tight. “It’s Jax. I saw him, and we talked.”

Alice hugged her tighter. “Oh, darlin’, why didn’t you call me? What did that rascal say to you?”

“Nothing that wasn’t true. He pointed out that I jumped right into the relationship without even getting to know the man he’d become. That I put so much pressure on the relationship that it was inevitable for it to fail.” She filled Alice in on their entire conversation. “He didn’t say anything about our last night together, but he didn’t need to. He blames the pressure I put on him—that was clear.”

Alice gasped. “That little turd. How dare he?” She turned toward Caitlyn and squeezed her shoulders. “You listen to me. When he came back to town, you’re the first person he asked about. He was just as hot ’n’ heavy into it as you were.”

Caitlyn hiccupped as the tears rolled down her cheek. “He’s right, though. As soon as he came back to town and we started dating, I was hearing wedding bells. I put my entire life on hold for Jax. And I’m doing the same thing with Dev, putting my plans for the camp on the back burner.”

“That’s not what you’re doing. You put your plans on hold because of that claim on the Lattimore land, not because of Dev.”

Caitlyn shook her head. “When Dev took me to that ranch, I realized that I should have been the one to have found it. He’s right, it is the perfect
