âI donât understand, Caitlyn.â Alice was sitting on the pool lounger staring at her. This time Caitlyn was the one whoâd drunk most of the chardonnay that sat between them. It had been two days since sheâd seen Dev. After sheâd refused to talk anymore, he had dropped her at her house and left. Since then, he hadnât texted or called. He hadnât responded to the text sheâd sent that night saying she was sorry.
Alice had come over unannounced when sheâd heard the story from Russ. âYou know heâs planning to leave tomorrow.â
Her heart lurched. The last couple of days had been a jumble of emotions for her. The conversations with Alexa and Alice, with Jax, and then with Dev had all crashed into one tightly knotted tangle that she couldnât separate no matter how hard she tried.
âLook, I know I was against you and Dev getting together, but I canât see you like this. Russ says Dev is a mess. Heâs never seen the poor guy like that.â She moved from her pool lounger to Caitlynâs. It was a rare cloudy and cool day so they were both in their sundresses enjoying the weather. Alice put an arm around Caitlyn. âWhat happened, darlinâ? Did things not go well in bed?â
Trust Alice not to mince words. âNot this time. We didnât even try.â Though that was not completely true. That morning in the barn was imprinted on her. She hadnât forgotten how her body had responded to him.
Alice waited patiently. Caitlynâs throat was tight. âItâs Jax. I saw him, and we talked.â
Alice hugged her tighter. âOh, darlinâ, why didnât you call me? What did that rascal say to you?â
âNothing that wasnât true. He pointed out that I jumped right into the relationship without even getting to know the man heâd become. That I put so much pressure on the relationship that it was inevitable for it to fail.â She filled Alice in on their entire conversation. âHe didnât say anything about our last night together, but he didnât need to. He blames the pressure I put on himâthat was clear.â
Alice gasped. âThat little turd. How dare he?â She turned toward Caitlyn and squeezed her shoulders. âYou listen to me. When he came back to town, youâre the first person he asked about. He was just as hot ânâ heavy into it as you were.â
Caitlyn hiccupped as the tears rolled down her cheek. âHeâs right, though. As soon as he came back to town and we started dating, I was hearing wedding bells. I put my entire life on hold for Jax. And Iâm doing the same thing with Dev, putting my plans for the camp on the back burner.â
âThatâs not what youâre doing. You put your plans on hold because of that claim on the Lattimore land, not because of Dev.â
Caitlyn shook her head. âWhen Dev took me to that ranch, I realized that I should have been the one to have found it. Heâs right, it is the perfect
